PILATES
WHAT IS PILATES
Pilates is a method of body conditioning devised by Joseph Hubertus Pilates in the 1920s. It is a unique programme of exercises that works the body as a whole unit by focusing on balancing the actions of the skeleton, the joints, the muscles and the internal organs.
It coordinates the movements of the upper and lower muscle groups and initiates these movements by what is commonly known as the “powerhouse” – (the deep muscles and surrounding fascia in our central core. If you imagine an apple core the core runs from the base of the apple to the stem. Likewise our core runs from the deep arches of our feet and right through the center of our body to where the jaw meets the scull), and consequently the body is brought into a better overall balance.
The Pilates system focuses on improving mobility, strength and alignment. It is renowned for success in alleviating, ridding and preventing back pain.
The exercises are designed to be performed with concentration, precision and flow and, in coordination with smooth breathing patterns, provide a feeling of mental and physical wellbeing together with increased confidence. At its most basic level Pilates can dramatically improve your posture and this alone breathes new life into your body.
